N18137 @ MKC - My father was a noted aviation historian. This photo is part of his vast collection. I thought you might like to see it when this plane was fairly new. I do not know the airport, but my guess is Kansas City. - by Janet Betts Dean

See PaulRichterTWAlegend.com for actual TWA records of NC18137. TWA purchased NC-18137 Sep. 12, 1940..."TWA purchased a Lockheed transport for use as a flying research laboratory and it was this man (Paul E. Richter, co-founder of TWA with Jack Frye and Walter Hamilton ) who took the controls for the first long flight of this plane"...from TWA Between Calls, by Johnny Graves, Nov.1940 (Richter tested all TWA aircraft even as Exec. V.P.)
18137 was used as High Altitude Research Lab thru Feb. 1942.
During WWII the Lockheed 12A was used for management and employee transport as military men had priority over all for airline seats.
TWA sold N-18137 to The Texas Co. (Texaco) on March 14th, 1945
It is now "The Spirit of TWA", a flying legend.

Correction; should read "Flight Research Laboratory" not High Altitude Research...sorry about that. Will supply stats and other pics if you like.

P.S. You have a great website.
Mine is dedicated to the facts of TWA history by TWA from original papers, not personal opinion and press of recent writers.
Thanks for the opportunity of clarifying this info.

Significant research has identified and located this Electra as the corporate executive plane of long-time TWA president and founder, Jack Frye. Purchased in 1937 by Bob Six for the newly formed Continental Airlines, it was later sold to TWA in 1940. At that time it became an executive plane for the president, and occasionally a TWA "Flight Research Laboratory." At one time the plane was registered as NX-18137, specifically for TWA flight tests.
