This former US Navy PBV-1A Catalina Bu68013 stored at the Pima Air & Space Museum was a working firebomber when it was written off on August 1, 1997 while fighting a fire near Ramona, California. While making a water pick-up from San Vincente Reservoir using the scoop technique, the nose dipped into the water causing the front fuselage to break off as it turned over. The two pilots escaped with minor injuries and separate pieces of the aircraft were later salvaged.
