This Boeing 707-321B was acquired by Omega Air in June 1995 and appeared at the 1996 Farnborough Air Show with “Omega Air Tanker-Transport” titles. Conversion to tanker configuration was undertaken by Tracor at Mojave and, along with the FAA certification in the Experimental category, this was the first time a commercial aircraft had been certified as a refuelling tanker.
U.S. Navy certification testing was undertaken at NAS Patuxent River in 2000 and in 2001 the aircraft was used for the first time in an actual air exercise when it operated from Prestwick Airport in support of a Joint Maritime Course, refuelling US Navy participants from the USS Enterprise’s Carrier Air Wing.
It was written off on May 18, 2011 following an aborted take-off at Point Mugu Naval Air Station, California but all three crew members on board escaped with minor injuries.
