This plane was built as C-47A 43-30710 and delivered to USAAF on 10/1/43. It was then assigned to the North Atlantic Wing of U.S. Air Transport Command and based in Iceland. In 1946 the plane became surplus and was sold to Flugfelag Islands as TF-ISH, and named “Gljafaxi.” It was converted to airline standard by Scottish Aviation, and then used extensively as a passenger aircraft until 1972. It was borrowed by the Icelandic Coast Guard in 1958 for service in the Cod War conflict. In 1972 Icelandair offered the plane as a gift to the State Soil Conservation Service and it was re-registered as TF-NPK. It was then converted for loading and distributing fertilizers, entering service in that duty in May 1973. It can distribute four tons of grass seed and fertilizer in 90 seconds. Information from Arthur Pearcy’s 1988 book, “Douglas DC-3 Survivors” also says that Icelandic Air Crews fly the plane for free and it is maintained by the Icelandic Coast Guard.
